Gore-Tex, eVent or a proprietary membrane: which should my brand choose?

The membrane decision is part technical, part commercial:
- Gore-Tex: strongest retail recognition and premium price acceptance. Trade-offs: licensing requirements, higher fabric cost, brand-standard construction rules, and fabric minimums set by the licensed mill.
- eVent and other branded ventilated membranes: strong breathability story for high-output use, with similar but usually lighter commercial constraints than Gore.
- Proprietary laminates: our own mill develops 2L/2.5L/3L laminates to your target rating and price point. Trade-offs: no third-party brand name on the hangtag - you sell the performance, not the ingredient brand. Advantages: lower fabric cost, far lower minimums, faster development iterations and full control over re-testing.
How brands actually decide: established labels with retail marketing muscle justify branded membranes on hero styles and run proprietary laminates on the volume line underneath; challenger brands often go proprietary across the range and invest the margin difference in their own brand building.
Both routes are open at UniOuter - we produce with licensed branded membranes on request and develop proprietary laminates in-house.
